Kobe scores 45pts on opening night but L.A loses in final seconds
It was only opening day but you could have felt the drama in Staples. Kobe was booed during pregame introductions and on his first possessions. But he finally won the crowd back. Especially in the closing minutes. Houston was ahead by 13 with less than 2 minutes to play, but Kobe lead his team to a wild 13-0 run, dishing out to Fisher for the game tying basket .
Unfortunately, Shane Battier drilled a three pointer with 2 seconds remaining, giving Houston a 95-93 victory over L.A.
Kobe, the league best scorer the last two years, scored 45pts including 18 in the 4th quarter. But he shot only 13 of 32 from the field, and while attempting a career high 27 free throws, he made only 18 of those. Obviously bothered by his wrist - he was wearing a sleeve on his right arm - Kobe gave it all last night, defending well vs T.Mac too.
He said he understood the boos but he was happy to hear the fans cheering at the end:
"I understand where they're coming from, but they really don't know the entire situation because I just keep my mouth shut -- as I should. they shouldn't worry about it, just focus on watching us play and watching us do what we do, and the business side of it should remain behind closed doors."
